Digital Interaction Model

In this model, cultural institutions use technology to promote digital interaction with their visitors and extend their customer journey. Think of Playgrounds, which uses Discord to maintain contact with their community of gamers, or the V&A Museum, which with Mused  (opens in new tab)has a special website for young people with various games and quizzes.

Digital Enrichment Model

Here, institutions use digital technology to innovate their product or service offered on-site. Think of the Nationale Theater (opens in new tab), which uses a VR headset to reach non-native speakers and visitors with hearing impairments. Or Studio Immersief, which as a theater company uses immersive technology such as VR and AR as an additional layer in their storyline to engage a younger audience. Also, be inspired by NU:Reality.

Hybrid Model

This involves a combination of offline and online activities. Think of a music ensemble like the Netherlands Bach Society, which has physical performances in concert halls but also brings these into the living room via a streaming platform. The International Literature Festival Utrecht (ILFU) (opens in new tab), which creates an engaged community with their membership model. Or the Festival Oude Muziek, which besides a multi-day festival has the EMTV platform with digital offerings (opens in new tab).

Platform Model

This model is entirely digital. A service is offered via a platform. Picl is a good example. Through their streaming service, you can watch films from cinemas at home on the couch.

Digital Efficiency Model

Here, digital technology is used to work smarter or more efficiently and save costs. Think, for example, of SPOT Groningen, which uses sensors to map visitor flows and better schedule staff. Or the Nasher Museum in the USA, which uses AI to develop exhibition concepts.

All these models aim to create new value with digital technology. Some services are offered for free, others through the regular ticket price, with a surcharge, via a subscription model, or through advertising revenue. Others are cost-saving, leaving more budget for other activities.

Innovation Hub

Not ready to start directly and want to experiment first? In an innovation hub like the one at Innovationlabs Utrecht, you can test hands-on whether your idea works in practice. Also, be inspired by Thunderboom (opens in new tab) or Design Museum Den Bosch (opens in new tab). Take the first step today towards a future-proof organization.
