Online workshop: Cybersecurity in the cultural sector

Do you work in a museum, theater, heritage institution, festival, or another cultural organization? Then you know how dependent you are on digital systems. Think of ticketing, audience data, CRM, and digital collections.

But what if your organization faces phishing, ransomware, or a data breach? Cyberattacks are becoming more frequent, even in the cultural sector. Learn in the practical online workshop how to make your organization digitally resilient. In four clear steps, you will work on an action plan for a secure digital foundation in just two hours.

Digital risks are no longer just an issue for large companies. Cultural organizations also face these risks. A wrong click on a phishing email, a poorly secured system, or a weak password can already be enough. The consequences can be unpleasant: visitor data may leak, systems may temporarily fail, or important files may become inaccessible. This costs time, money, and trust.

That is why it is important to take measures in time. With the right basic agreements and a clear plan, you can prevent many problems. In this workshop, DEN helps you gain an overview and work step by step toward a secure digital work environment.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is specifically for:

  • IT staff in the cultural sector
  • Heads of operations and information managers
  • Directors and management
  • Staff who want to work on cybersecurity
  • Anyone working in museums, theaters, heritage houses, festivals, and other cultural institutions

You don't need to be a technical expert. The workshop is practical and suitable for all levels.

What will you learn? Four steps to cybersecurity

We work with the Cybersecurity roadmap by DEN (opens in new tab).

  1. Identify your 'crown jewels'

Which digital processes and data are indispensable? For example, your ticketing system, visitor data, or digital collection. You will learn what the impact is if these systems fail.

  2. Determine your risk acceptance

Which risks can you accept? Which risks must you really mitigate? You will learn to make conscious choices.

  3. Implement control measures

Which technical and organizational measures really help? Think of clear roles, policies, agreements with suppliers, and IT security.

  4. Monitor, train, and evaluate

Cybersecurity is not a one-time action. You will learn how to make security an integral part of your organization.

What will it bring you?

After this workshop, you will know where to start and how to proceed.

This online workshop takes place during the national Resilient Heritage Action Day 2026 (May 13). During the week of May 11, the Netherlands reflects on the protection of our cultural heritage in times of crisis. Think of war, climate change, natural disasters, and cyberattacks. Initiators such as the Dutch UNESCO Commission, Blue Shield Netherlands, and Cultural Emergency Response call on the sector to take action.
